Peer Recovery Support Specialist (22-002):  The Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) fulfills a unique role in the support and recovery from mental illness and substance abuse disorders. A PRSS is a person in recovery from a mental illness and/or substance abuse disorder, who has been trained to work with others on his/her individual road to recovery. The role of the Recovery Support Specialist Proactively engage consumers and possess communication skills / ability to transfer new concepts, ideas, and insight to others. Facilitate peer support groups. Assist in creating a crisis plan/ Psychiatric Advanced Directive. Utilize and teach problem solving techniques with consumers. Teach consumers how to identify and combat negative self-talk and fears. Assist in building social skills in the community that will enhance quality of life. Support the development of natural support systems and assist other staff in identifying program and service environments that are conducive to recovery. Attend treatment team and program development meetings to ensure the presence of the consumer voice and to promote the use of self-directed recovery tools. Providing and advocating for effective recovery-oriented services. Assist consumers in obtaining services that suit that individual’s recovery needs. Inform consumers about community and natural supports and how to utilize these in the recovery process. Maintain current clinical case records and other required documentation in a manner to meet established requirements. Up to 75% of time may be spent in the community with up to 25% of time travelling.

High School diploma or GED. Minimum one-year participation in local or national consumer advocacy or knowledge in mental health and/or substance abuse recovery. Requires the willingness and ability to work irregular hours as needed to ensure quality standards are met in service delivery. Possess knowledge about various mental health and substance abuse settings and ancillary services (i.e., Social Security, housing services, advocacy organizations). Maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in the mental health and substance abuse and offender population fields by reading books, journals, and other materials. Current Oklahoma Driver’s License and a good driving record and ability to provide own transportation.
