A free art exhibit and sale will observe the positive effects of art on the mind during World Mental Health Day, 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, October. 10, at Muzart on Main Street Gallery, Reunion Center Building, 4th & Main, downtown Tulsa.

Studies show art is good medicine whether we observe or create it. Numerous studies also show art improves our mood and helps with depression and other mental health issues.

Looking at art causes the brain to create the same chemical reaction as when someone falls in love. If you fall in love with any art at the Art in Mind exhibition, you can purchase it. A portion of the art sales will benefit Counseling and Recovery Services of Oklahoma, a nonprofit community mental health center providing mental health services to adults, children and families regardless of their ability to pay.

Admission is free and open to the public. Works available for sale range from $5 to $1,200 and include everything from painting to photography and pottery to jewelry.

Muzart on Main Street Gallery, 9 E. 4th St., is in a space generously donated by the Reunion Center Building and curated by Betty Dalsing. Betty, a local artist and owner of the former Atlas Art Gallery where she exhibited and sold her art and the art of other Oklahoma artists. The gallery is a venue for artists who would not otherwise have a place to show their works.

MUZARTS Gallery artists include Sharon Allred, Heidi de Contreras, Linda Coward, Mikey Coy, Betty Dalsing, Susie Games, Janice Hickey, Karen Lamb, Anitra Lavanhar, Elizabeth Markley, Jennith Moncrief, Julie Miller, Anne Soloman, Gayle Tapp, Sheri Ishmael Waldrop, Mary Whitney, and Sandy Wilhite. Many of the artists will be present to discuss their works with gallery visitors.

The Tulsa Press Club will offer food and beverages for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to Counseling & Recovery Services. The Tulsa Press Club, formed before statehood in 1906, promotes the highest standards of journalism and encourages students to pursue journalism careers by awarding five college scholarships annually in writing, editing, broadcasting, designing and photography.

Radio IDL, a digital radio station, streams the blues and information from Tulsa’s IDL (Inter Dispersal Loop) to the world, and is sponsoring the event.
